FISHERMEN’S CONSERVATION ASSOCIATION OUTRAGED BY ONGOING POACHING of STRIPED BASS

Fishermen’s Conservation Association Wants Gamefish Status for Striped Bass

(Staten Island, NY) 2/10/11 – Members of the Fishermen's Conservation Association were angered by the latest incidents of illegal striped bass fishing occurring in Maryland this week. In the most recent enforcement action, Maryland Natural Resource Police seized 1,159 pounds of illegally harvested striped bass from 12,000 yards of illegally anchored gillnets.

 

“Citizens across Maryland and up and down the East Coast continue to be appalled as more than 10 tons of illegally harvested rockfish have been pulled from the Chesapeake Bay over the past week,” said Governor Martin O’Malley. “These violations are a shameful theft of the public trust, impacting a fishery we have worked long and hard to restore, our law-abiding watermen, and our sister states that share this important resource.”

 

According to FCA Chairman Frank Crescitelli, “The sad truth is we could never hope to make these kinds of discoveries in New York because as hard as our DEC officers work, the fact is that there are only five officers to cover over 125 miles of shoreline. That is simply not enough manpower to effectively complete the task. Rampant poaching like this has been going on for decades. Compounding the problem is that although all those dead bass can be counted - there is no doubt how many are dead - they have never been counted in the mortality numbers of striped bass in any management plan to date. We need to stop poaching now, and the only way to do that is to make it a gamefish now. Let'
